Old-school gamers looking to show up all those fancy kids with their PSPs and DS Lites (or even our own Ben Heck) are about to get another weapon in their arsenal: Curt Vendel, the designer of the Atari Flashback Portable, posted a couple pics of the unit to the AtariAge forums, and it's looking pretty slick. In addition to aping the ridged lines of the 2600, the Portable runs off three AA batteries, loads in games from a mini-USB connector (although how those games will be distributed is still up in the air) and features a 320 x 240 screen with AV out. No word on pricing or availability, but after the constant claims that this thing was vapor, it's good to at least see it in the flesh. Fleshy plastic, anyway.

Office Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

In what undoubtedly will be remembered as a historic and life-changing event for PSP enthusiasts everywhere, a group of coders (Noobz and Archaemic, to be exact) have exploited a loophole in the Ubisoft game Lumines which enables homebrew-ing on all PSP firmware versions, from 1.00 to 3.50. This first ever all-firmware hack is a significant development, as homebrewing up until now has required specific versions (and usually the use of downgraders). No word yet on how Ubisoft feels about being party to this party, but something tells us Sony isn't going to be real stoked.

It's been so long that we'd completely forgotten that the PSP was underclocked at release. With Sony's 3.50 firmware update, the PSP's processor will be upgraded from 266 to 333 MHz. This slight boost in processing power will offer developers a bit more power to design for, though as most of our readers know, that's not a massive speed bump.
Originally, most speculated that the system was clocked down for battery life. Kotaku speculates that the processor bump supports the prospect of a bigger battery and/or the rumored new PSP system. And we'd have to agree.

Sony has admitted that it sneakily upgraded the PSP's clockspeed to 333MHz (from 266MHz) in the version 3.50 firmware update that was released last month. This admission is confusing for a couple of reasons: for starters, Sony originally underclocked the PSP in order to increase the stated battery life of the console. Does that mean they'll be forced to decrease the stated battery life, so as to avoid false advertisement? It's also rather odd that developers are only now being granted access to the extra MHz oomph, prompting mutterings of a new PSP model which -- as one Joystiq commentator points out -- could take as long to appear as games that take full advantage of the 333MHz clockspeed. Or, maybe this upgrade simply enabled the PSP to cope with all that "remote play" malarkey that 3.50 enabled. That would be the logical assumption.

Ever since we waited in line for a PSP only to find out you could still get them the next morning, we haven't exactly been thrilled about camping out. But being the gadget freaks that we are, we still want them. What's a geek to do?
Check out Craigslist of course! There are already listings in NYC and San Francisco for "Professional Line Waiters". Yeah that's right, you pay these day laborers around $250, and in exchange you've got yourself a guaranteed place in line without ever touching the concrete.
And for you cheapskates who think $250 is too much. You could always just take a page from the PS3 launch. Go around the corner of an Apple store, grab Homeless Joe and pay him to sit there for a fraction of the price. Hell, he was probably going to sit there anyways.

Don't place your bets just yet, but rumors are beginning to swirl in the DS Lite arena about a possible redesign. Considering all the PSP2 whispering that has been going on of late, it wouldn't be too surprising for Nintendo to plunk down a bombshell of its own in the face of competition, but moreover, we know Nintendo has a history of keeping its handheld hardware fresh. Be it colors or miniaturization, we've seen the firm's handhelds shrink and don new hues for ages, and the most recent blurb suggests that a new iteration of the DS could "feature a larger screen and more readable fonts for users who may have a difficult time playing on the smaller machine." Hey, it's not like grandpa isn't already getting his game on with another Big N product, right?

DARPA's proposed LANdroids won't be the first installation to offer up expendable data gathering pawns on the battlefield, but these "intelligent, autonomous radio relay nodes" could be used to "establish and manage mesh networks in urban settings." Essentially, these critters would be cheaply produced and handed out en masse for warfighters to drop at random in order to create temporary and continually evolving network infrastructures that could lead to better communication over various occupied regions. It even sounds like these creatures will sport self-healing design cues, and while we're not sure if they'll be immune to imminent EMP blasts, we can already envision bored soldiers futilely hooking these things up to their PSPs and searching for an open game room. Sony's PS3 anti-hacker walls are crumbling, with an exploit for 1.10 and 1.11 firmwares recently found, and the announcement of the first copied game to boot on the heretofore unassailable console -- though it isn't actually playable yet, just booting. Sony, of course, isn't taking this lying down, and has threatened legal action to anyone using these new exploits illegally. "Unfortunately, hackers will try to exploit any hardware system software," said SCEA spokesperson Dave Karraker. "The best we can do as a company is to make our security that much stronger and aggressively pursue legal action against anyone caught trying to use an exploit in an illegal manner." Of course, Dave wasn't abundantly clear as to what's "illegal" activity, but soundbites aren't exactly the best place to start bantering about fair use. What is clear is that these are only the opening shots in what promises to be a long war between Sony and the homebrew scene, with the PSP community ...

While we wait for Sony Ericsson's rumored PSP phone to arrive, the folks at Gionee have created the Gionee S20 slider, a cellphone that comes with an NES emulator. Not that we advocate this kinda stuff, but, er, you could load up the phone with your favorite ROMs and then hook it up to your TV (the phone comes with a TV out connector) for some big-screen 8-bit action. Lets see the iPhone do that. – Louis Ramirez
