Looks like Sony tried to slip us one in their latest PSP Firmware update. Sure it's got a new memory saving mode for the PSP's web browser and support for new PlayStation Network games, but what they didn't tell you is that for homebrew fans Firmware 3.10 will secretly brick your PSP. Anyone out there install the new update? – Louis Ramirez

Surely you jest! But we don't, you see, 'cause it comes straight from the horse's proverbial mouth. The worldwide head of gaming for Dell, Abizar Vahkaria, was recently asked by UK publication PC Plus whether Dell was planning to release some sort of gaming-oriented handheld, to which Vahkaria replied: "You know, that's definitely one that's on the radar screen, but we have no plans to talk about anything today." That not quite a tacit admission, and there's no telling how comprehensive Abizar's radar screen happens to be, but it's a pretty exciting word all the same from a company whose product range seems to be shrinking rather than growing of late, given the demise of the DJ and lack of updates for the Axim (pictured to the right, rocking a bit of Quake III). Along with the doubt of the actual implications of this statement, it's really anyone's guess what sort of form a Dell "gaming-oriented handheld" might take -- it could be anything from a souped...

Nevermind all those PSP2 rumors swirling about, as the real beef all you PSP owners (at least, one's that don't demolish them for fun) have with Sony is the lack of colored units here on American soil. Apparently, someone finally figured out that blessing foreign lands with a rainbow-like assortment of PSP colors wasn't exactly fair to us North Americans, and now we're seeing blue and silver Sony faceplates pop up for those who don't mind a bit of DIY action. So if you're yearning to get a dash of color on your current PlayStation Portable, and aren't too keen on dropping 35 large, you can snag either blue or silver right now for $28.50 apiece.

The latest Sony PSP firmware, version 3.03, has been cracked. (Given all these recent hacks, maybe we should change our name to Hackmodo?) It turns out that the powers that be didn't properly patch Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, so hackers are still using it to hack the PSP to pieces. Unfortunately, the only app that can be run on the newly rehacked PSP so far is of the "Hello, world!" vein, but a proper downgrader is expected soon. Downgrader = "homebrew," ahoy! – Nicholas Deleon

While everyone is waiting for the price of 128GB SSDs or hell, the 32GB variety to bottom-out, Samsung and others have been quietly beefing up their slim, 1.8-inch N-Series hard drives from 20 to 30 to 40 and now... 60GB using perpendicular recording techniques. Better yet, Sammy's drives are just 5-mm thin, spin at 4,200rpm, and feature a (relatively) quick 7.14-millisecond average seek time and a 2MB data buffer. It's not silent like an SSD but they do squeeze the noise down to just 1.8 dB -- or just above the human threshold for healthy ears (read: not yours). Of course, Sammy calls it a world's first even though Seagate began shipping their 5-mm, 60GB, single platter 1.8-inch hard drive more than two weeks ago. Ah well, so goes the hyperbole. While we're waiting for Tosh's chubby (8-mm thick) 100GB cousin to get an iPod fitting, the skids are now greased for a 60GB PSP on the quick... or not.

While a bevy of gadgets have been laid to rest for 15 seconds of YouTube fame, Sony's PSP has somehow eluded the brutal beatings that the iPod, PlayStation 3, Wii, and other highly coveted gizmos have suffered. Unfortunately, the PlayStation Portable has now received the same off-kilter treatment as the electronics that have come (and gone) before, as a couple of rowdy youngsters with a faux katana laid the smack down on a helpless PSP. Interestingly, the device seemed to hold up fairly well to the bashing it took, but we can't help but wonder just how sharp the sword was that was used in this melee. Seriously, we know how bad you want a PSP2 to finally surface, but we promise that getting medieval on your current rendition won't encourage those Sony execs to move their plans along any faster. If you dare, click on through for the ruthless obliteration.

We fly high at Engadget -- our chains hang low and our gadgets shine bright. When Sony told us they were dropping a gold PSP, we thought we finally had a gaming device gaudy enough to roll with our PharrellBerrys and Vertus, only to be disappointed by an unimpressive paint job. Well at least someone is coming through for us and releasing peripherals baller enough to be added to our growing collection of luxury devices. Swiss manufacturer Pat Says Now's "world's most expensive mouse" comes in three choices of 18-karat white, yellow or red gold, with 59 diamonds in either a flower or scattered design. For what it is, you would think it would offer a resolution higher than 800 dpi, but for the privilege of having another "world's ___" we suppose that's a small price to pay in paying such a large price.

Ever since the PSP launched, people have proclaimed to be waiting for a certain "something" that would kick its nearest rival off its pedestal, dig it a grave, and then nail it into its coffin, all in one fell swoop. We're guessing that a keyboard attachment isn't the combo move that the fanboys have been waiting for, despite the abandoned efforts of Logic, and the new, successful efforts of a coder called Moneytoo, who created a homebrew application that lets you hook up a Palm Universal Wireless keyboard to your PSP so that you can write simple text files. Nevermind that it won't help with typing in crazy long SSIDs, WEP keys, or URLs, it's still a rather impressive coding job, not least in the context of Sony's repeated efforts to prevent people from running unsigned code on their little portables and Logic's consequent failure to produce a PSP keyboard peripheral. The fact that Moneytoo made it possible to use a 3rd party peripheral which can be...

We can't really call this a loss for Sony, 'cause it's still selling PSP widgets to these hackers, and we assume should be overjoyed at the kind of "in the face of all odds" homebrew scene its PSP still enjoys, but somehow or other Deniska has defeated The proverbial Man and released a new version of the MAP THIS! software which includes support for Sony's official GPS. The little dongle only just hit Japan last month, so props to Deniska for the quick turnaround. If you're hoping to do pull this off with your own PSP, you'll need to import the receiver from some place like Play-Asia, and be running 3.03 OE-B open-edition firmware.

We're pretty sure PSP2 rumors won't die out until the last PSP fanboy utters his final gasp, "UMD rulez!" on his death bead, but that doesn't mean we can't have fun poking fun at them in the in-between time. From the outset, we're kind of liking the look here, and there seems to be plenty of room for that dual analog setup everyone's been clamoring for. Plus the metal and ruggedized rubber build seems likable enough. Unfortunately, the inclusion of UMD, Memory Stick and 8GB of flash seems pretty far fetched -- either Sony loses the UMD and goes for all-downloadable games, or it sticks with its tried and true method of milking consumers on Memory Stick purchases, it's hard to imagine an all-in approach. Other dubious specs include a "200% Brighter Screen," and the more likely a/b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 and visual battery display. We're not banking on this one, and Sony's been pretty down on the topic in general, but hopefull...
